Languages and Literature

Since the inception of Gujarat Vidyapith, the Gujarati department has been active in the teaching of Gujarati language and literature and engaged in the research programmes. Through well-designed undergraduate, postgraduate and research programme, the department has been at the forefront of imparting quality education to the students. The department boasts of its association with the leading luminaries of tkhe country such as Archarya Krupalani, Pandit Sukhlal, Kakasaheb Kalelkar, Nagindas Parikh, Ramnarayan Pathak, Umashankar Joshi and Sundaram among others.

The department has been headed by some of the best known scholars in the field of Gujarati literature and criticism. Prominent names include Prof. mohanbhai patel (writer and critic), Prof. Kanubhai Jani (folklorist, poet, and critic), Prof. Chandrakant Sheth (poet and critic), Prof. Usha Upadhyay (feminist writer and scholar) among others. Currently, the department is head by Prof. Sanjay Makwana who is also a poet and critic. An abiding feature of all these different kinds of scholars and writers is their unflinching commitment to Gandhian thoughts and action which has made the department a center for reading literature through Gandhian lens.

UG Programme

Intake: 57 (Reservation of seats for SC/ST/OBC/EWS as per the Govt. of India rules)

Eligibility: 10 + 2 Pass

Duration: 4 Years (8 Semester), B.A. with Certificate - 1 year, B.A. with Diploma - 2 year, B.A. with Degree - 3 year, B.A. with Honourse - 4 year, B.A. with Honours with Research - 4 year, N.B. - a student has to undertake a 4 Credit internship during the summer vacation after the First Year.

PG Programme

Research Program (Ph.D.)

The research programme of the department covers all areas of Gujarati language and literature, but special focus has always remained Gandhian thoughts in literary texts. Following the Gandhian creed, the department also focuses on literatures from the margins such as Dalit literature, Tribal literature, and Women's literature and others.

Intake: As per the number of vacant seats available with the research supervisors in the department

Eligibility: Post-graduation in Gujarati language and literature OR 4 Year UG (Honours With research) in Gujarati
